"Chainmail Activity"

Chainmail Activity is a 90 minute demonstration with active participation from the students. The armourer teaches about the history of Chainmail and then shows the students the basic pattern using pliers. The students then construct some chainmail on their own. Whatever the students make they get to keep. Usually students can make a bracelet or even a necklace.
Chainmail (or "maille") is small metal rings woven together in various different patterns to form protective metal armour. Chainmail is like metal cloth. It is very flexible, contouring to the wearer's body. People today use it for jewelry and even clothing, such as dresses and shirts. Today, there are even professions that use chainmail (or a variation of it) such as a Butcher (glove made of it to protect his hand).
This workshop is designed for 50 students. We bring all materials, which include the metal rings and two pair of pliers for each student. It is an activity that promotes fine motor skills as the students will have to manipulate a pair of pliers in each hand.
